He was in business with his father and later in his life he became a dairyman and a member of the Independent Milk Producers Association as a board member. In his retirement, he specialized in grooming dogs.

King served in the United States Army for five years in the medical division, working only with Colonels and Generals. King was to accompany the Colonel to the surrendering of the Japanese on the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on September 4, 1945. King resigned before that and returned home. King served in many countries during World War II such as Bismarck, Australia, South Philippines, the U.S., (Texas and Louisiana).

King was preceded in death by his parents and by his loving wife of 40 years, Gradie Virginia Hopkins; his son, King K. Hinnant, II and one sister, Claudine Martin.
