King Kendall Hinnant, our beloved husband, father and grandfather, entered into eternal rest on Monday, June 18, 2018 at the age of 99, after a wonderfully long and memorable life.
King was born on January 7, 1919. He was a member of a pioneer family in Jim Wells County; the son of King and Aldine Hinnant. Kings’s grandfather was a trail boss, personal body guard, and foreman for Capt. Richard King; and the first Sheriff of Jim Wells County. King’s father was named by Mrs. Richard King after the King Family.
His father was owner and operator of the first auction barn in South Texas, for which King became an auctioneer and was very proud to work side by side with his father. He was in business with his father and later in his life he became a dairyman and a member of the Independent Milk Producers Association as a board member. In his retirement, he specialized in grooming dogs.
King served in the United States Army for five years in the medical division, working only with Colonels and Generals. King was to accompany the Colonel to the surrendering of the Japanese on the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on September 4, 1945. King resigned before that and returned home. King served in many countries during World War II such as Bismarck, Australia, South Philippines, the U.S., (Texas and Louisiana).
King was preceded in death by his parents and by his loving wife of 40 years, Gradie Virginia Hopkins; his son, King K. Hinnant, II and one sister, Claudine Martin.
He is survived by three children, Nancy English, Cynthia Smith, and Pamela Ann Elliot; his twelve grandchildren, Donna, Natalie, Tresa, and Donny English; Stephen Cunningham, Shannon Frost, and Howard A. Smith,III; Wendy, Clint, Kendall Hinnant; Kimberly Howard, Kerry Elliott; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held with family receiving friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, June 22, 2018 at Holmgreen Mortuary in Alice.
Graveside Service with Military Honors will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 23, 2018 at Alice Cemetery with Deacon Rick Costley officiating.
Arrangements are entrusted to Holmgreen Mortuary, 2061 E. Main St., Alice, Texas.
