Harrison Clarke Gunter passed away on Friday, February 16, 2018.
He was born in Gunter, Texas on September 24, 1921 to Mayme Ruth Harrison Gunter and Lee Clarke Gunter.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister and brother-in-law, Martha Ruth and Bennie Sanders, his brother, Joe Oscar Gunter, his son, Gary Glen Gunter, his grandson, Eric Dwane Gunter, his daughter-in-law, Laura Gunter and his first wife, Billie Ruth Gunter.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia Jean Gunter; his son and daughter-in-law, Buddie Clarke and Barbara Gunter; his granddaughter, Mindy (Jeremy) Ballard, grandson, Dillon Clark Gunter, step-grandson, Byron (Cara) Smith and their children Emily and Jackson; his great-granddaughter, Gretchen Elizabeth Gunter; his step-daughter Lynn (Arnold) Terrell, his stepson Douglas (Dean) Agostini and his dear step-grandson, James Ian Terrell and daughters, Isabella and Veronica.
Harrison joined the Marine Corps in 1942 at the age of 20, became a pilot and served on active duty until after the war in 1946. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain.
After the war, he moved to Alice, Texas where he built the Buckhorn Drive-In Theater, later another Drive-In in Alice, one in McAllen, and one in Mission. He was a theater owner for forty years, later starting Gunter Signs and Buckhorn Mini Storage in Alice and also the McAllen Flea Market.
He loved fishing and hunting with his friends and made many trips to Mexico, Central and South America, and Canada, usually flying his own plane.
In 1973 he bought a ranch in northern British Columbia, Canada where he and Patricia raised cattle and quarter horses and enjoyed ranch life until 2001 when the ranch was sold. They then built a summer home in northern Alberta and have spent the past summers there.
He was a very active member of the Alice Jaycees and the Alice Noon Lions Club. He was also a director of the Alice Youth Rodeo.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, February 26, 2018 at Holmgreen Mortuary Chapel.
