Billy Gene Bedford, age 82, passed away early Saturday morning, January 6, 2018, at his home in Agua Dulce, Texas following a courageous three year battle with cancer. Born on February 27, 1935 in San Antonio, Texas, he was the son of the late Walter Bedford and Rosa Nell (Johnson) Bedford of La Puerta Ranch in Agua Dulce.
Billy attended school in Agua Dulce, was a member of the United States Air Force and attended college at Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas.
As a young man growing up on the ranch, he fished and swam in the creek and explored and hunted the land. Billy raised his children, built his own home, planted gardens and grew hay there, also. He enjoyed rodeoing as a young man and continued racing, training and shoeing horses throughout his life. He was a master trainer; his beloved pets included dogs, Shep and Abby, Beaver the horse, Ellie Mae the mule, and Tex the longhorn. He spent many years traveling with Tex to South Texas fairs and events.
He loved Agua Dulce and La Puerta Ranch, his lifetime residence, and he was honored to serve as a Constable in Nueces County for 24 years.
Billy is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Rosa; brother, Arlas Bedford; and sisters, Bernice Hartsfield, Marie Burris and Walter Pearl Zapalac; and great-granddaughter, Skyla James.
Billy is survived by his son, Johnny Reed of Pine Mills; his daughter, Nita Bedford Fisher and husband, Kerry, of Midland; and his daughter, Sara Phipps, of Pearland; also, his son, Gene Bedford, of Odessa; his daughter, Cara Burns of Cedar Park; and his son, Billy Bedford, of Agua Dulce. He has eight grandchildren including Leia Dewell, Ryan James, Calen Bedford, Riley James, Andee Elam, Sagen Forest, Chloe Burns, Cyla Bobo and seven great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his sister, Rosemary Johnston, of New Braunfels; brother, Buddy Zapalac and wife, Nancy, of Victoria; and sister, Jimmy Pearl Allen and husband, Jerry, of Huntsville.
A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 21, 2018 at Holmgreen Mortuary Chapel.
