Roel Nunez Gonzales, age 51, entered into eternal rest on Friday, December 29, 2017 in a hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas. He lost his courageous two-and-a-half year battle with cancer.
Roel was born on May 17, 1966 in Alice, Texas to Stella and Marcos G. “Lupe” Gonzales.
He grew up in Orange Grove, Texas and graduated from Orange Grove High School in 1984. He was an altar server at St. John of the Cross Catholic Church all during his school years and later was a member of the Knights of Columbus. After high school, he attended Del Mar College, but decided to become a carpenter. He worked with his dad for 30 years.
Roel enjoyed cooking barbecue with his friends. He was a humble, down-to-earth young man and loved everyone.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lupe Gonzales, Jr. and Ricky Gonzales; his maternal grandparents, Marcelo and Evarista Nunez, and his paternal grandfather, Marcos Gonzales; three uncles, Oracio Nunez, Lionel (Linda) Nunez, Baldemar Armando Gonzalez, and a cousin, Smiley Salinas.
Roel is survived by his parents, Lupe and Stella Nunez Gonzales of Orange Grove, Texas; his uncle, Lupe Nunez of San Antonio, Texas and his aunt, Elida (Cristobal) Resendez of Orange Grove, Texas and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Visitation will be held at Holmgreen Mortuary Chapel on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with Holy Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. that evening.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 4, 2018 at St. John of the Cross Catholic Church with Father Prince officiating. Interment will follow at Orange Grove Cemetery in Orange Grove, Texas.
